What the job entails
As a Backend Engineer, you will develop and operate Java- and Kotlin-based backend applications for a next-generation core banking platform. You will join a full-scale system renewal project, contributing from initial planning and architecture through to implementation, deployment and ongoing operation.
Your responsibilities will include designing for performance, scalability, security and stability; selecting appropriate architecture and middleware; and using infrastructure effectively to solve complex system challenges. You will also tune microservices, configure monitoring and respond to alerts to maintain the reliability expected of a financial platform.
The team is building both the system and its ways of working from the ground up, giving you the opportunity to influence development standards, tools and engineering practices. You will collaborate with product, technology and business stakeholders, and are expected to be seconded to a partner banking organisation as part of the project.
Key requirements
Three to five years’ experience in backend software development.
Professional experience with Java; strong ability in other mainstream programming languages.
Sound understanding of data structures, algorithms and object-oriented programming.
Experience designing database schemas across relational and NoSQL databases, and writing efficient queries.
Experience developing and tuning web applications, with security considered throughout the development lifecycle.
Business-level conversational English.
Practical experience using AI or LLM tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Gemini or CodeWhisperer in professional software development.
Experience in financial services development is advantageous.
Experience implementing RESTful APIs, publish/subscribe systems or database clients is desirable.
Experience with AWS, microservices, scalable applications or systems handling high transaction volumes is beneficial.
Experience contributing to system architecture and end-to-end product design is welcomed.
Business-level Japanese, equivalent to native proficiency or JLPT N1/N2, is advantageous.
A track record of integrating AI-assisted development into system design, delivery or workflow automation is a plus.
Ability to structure ideas logically, communicate clearly and demonstrate strong ownership.
