What the Job Entails
As a Backend Engineer, you will develop and enhance core banking services and customer-facing product features using Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot. You will contribute to a major core banking renewal initiative while working within a newly formed organization where you can help establish development practices and technical standards.
Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing reliable backend services, developing efficient database schemas and queries, building and integrating APIs, and contributing to scalable microservices architectures. You will also address performance, security, and operational considerations throughout the development lifecycle.
Working in a diverse, international team, you will collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to deliver high-quality financial technology solutions. The role is based in Tokyo and offers a hybrid workstyle with super-flexible hours and no core working time.
Key Requirements
3–5 years of professional backend development experience.
Strong proficiency in Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot.
Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and software engineering fundamentals.
Experience designing schemas and writing efficient queries for relational and NoSQL databases.
Practical experience with web development, performance tuning, and security-conscious system design.
Experience developing or integrating REST APIs, database clients, and publish/subscribe systems.
Familiarity with cloud-based development, particularly AWS.
Understanding of scalable system design and microservices architecture.
Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or Gemini.
Business-level conversational English and the ability to work effectively in an international environment.
Experience with banking or financial services is highly valued.
Familiarity with JavaScript infrastructure including Docker, Kubernetes, ArgoCD, or Kafka is advantageous.
Japanese proficiency at approximately JLPT N1 or N2 level is a plus.
