Overview
A global private markets investment firm is seeking a senior institutional fundraising and client coverage leader to oversee Japan market activities. The role will focus on building strategic relationships with leading institutional investors while representing the firm across a broad range of private markets investment solutions.
This position serves as a senior market representative responsible for fundraising growth, client engagement, and collaboration with global investment, product, and structuring teams.
Position Summary
The Head of Japan, Institutional Client Solutions will lead institutional client coverage across sovereign wealth funds, pensions, insurance companies, and major financial institutions. The role combines strategic relationship management, fundraising leadership, team management, and market development responsibilities within a highly international environment.
The position also includes selective exposure to wholesale and intermediary distribution channels where relevant.
Key Responsibilities
Institutional Client Coverage
Lead and expand institutional investor relationships across Japan
Develop long-term strategic partnerships with pensions, insurers, banks, asset managers, and other large institutions
Manage senior-level engagement with CIOs, heads of alternatives, portfolio construction leaders, and risk stakeholders
Fundraising & Business Development
Develop and execute Japan fundraising and client coverage strategies
Drive AUM growth and deepen client penetration across key accounts
Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the institutional investor landscape
Support cross-selling opportunities across multiple private markets strategies
Leadership & Team Management
Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing local sales and client coverage team
Establish scalable client engagement processes and accountability structures
Support career development and team collaboration initiatives
Strategic Client Advisory
Act as a content-driven relationship manager with strong technical investment credibility
Present private markets strategies and portfolio construction concepts to senior investment stakeholders
Translate complex investment ideas into practical client solutions and narratives
Cross-functional & Global Collaboration
Partner closely with global product specialists, investment teams, and regional distribution functions
Ensure consistency in client messaging and strategic priorities across markets
Coordinate with internal stakeholders on distribution and intermediary opportunities where applicable
Market Intelligence & Strategy
Monitor competitive trends, investor sentiment, and market developments
Contribute insights to regional fundraising and market strategy discussions
Represent the firm professionally within the Japan investment community
Qualifications
Required
Minimum 15 years of institutional sales, fundraising, or distribution experience within private markets, alternatives, or investment management
Proven fundraising and client development track record within Japan
Strong understanding of private markets investment strategies and portfolio construction concepts
Ability to communicate complex investment structures, risk-return considerations, and strategic investment ideas effectively
Established senior-level relationships across pensions, insurers, banks, asset managers, and institutional investors in Japan
Fluent Japanese and English communication skills
Preferred
Broader APAC institutional network and regional market exposure
Experience with wholesale, intermediary, or private bank distribution channels
Leadership experience managing sales or client coverage teams
