Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee a wide range of legal and compliance matters spanning e-commerce, real estate, employment, operations, product safety, and corporate governance in Japan. This is a hands-on role involving end-to-end legal support.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate various types of contracts with external partners.

  • Provide legal support for new business initiatives and product launches.

  • Manage all corporate governance responsibilities in Japan, including licensing and compliance filings.

  • Lead responses to legal disputes, investigations, or litigation that may arise domestically.

  • Handle regulatory affairs and act as the company’s representative during interactions with local authorities.

  • Coordinate with and manage external legal counsel when necessary.

  • Partner cross-functionally with internal stakeholders—including teams in Product, Business, Operations, Procurement, IT, Security, and Finance—to support projects and broader company initiatives.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Licensed attorney in Japan, or a foreign-qualified lawyer (e.g., U.S., UK, Australia, Singapore) with significant experience practicing in Japan.

  • Minimum 10 years of post-qualification legal experience, ideally a mix of in-house and law firm roles.

  • Fluency in Japanese (written and spoken). English proficiency preferred but not required.

  • Strong ability to deliver practical, business-focused legal advice under pressure.

  • Willingness to take on new responsibilities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Adaptability to rapid business changes and ambiguity.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Sound legal judgment and strategic problem-solving abilities.
