About the Role
The Accountant will play a key role in supporting financial operations in Japan while collaborating with the global finance team. Reporting to the Finance Manager in Japan, this position focuses on ensuring accuracy in accounting, tax compliance, and financial reporting. The role also supports global entities and contributes to providing a seamless service experience for clients and vendors.
Key Responsibilities
Japan Operations

Manage financial activities for the Japan business.

Support clients during onboarding and address finance-related inquiries.

Review vendor invoices to ensure compliance with Japanese accounting and tax regulations (Invoice System, Consumption Tax, Withholding Tax).

Prepare and issue client invoices in accordance with local legal requirements.

Verify customer information and conduct compliance checks.

Handle banking operations including payments, receipts, and coordination with financial institutions.

Liaise with external tax consultants to ensure proper accounting treatment.
General Accounting

Support monthly accounting close processes, including reconciliations, tax calculations, and audit assistance.

Assist in preparing and filing tax returns, ensuring compliance with Japanese and international tax laws.

Reconcile general ledger accounts to maintain accuracy in financial records.

Support annual closing activities, including journal entries, accruals, intercompany adjustments, and transfer pricing reconciliation.

Prepare audit documentation and respond to auditor requests.

Participate in process improvement and system automation initiatives.
Requirements

Minimum 3 years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, audit, tax, or compliance.

Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Experience supporting preparation of corporate, consumption, and withholding tax returns.

Solid understanding of Japan’s invoice system and consumption tax rules.

Ability to communicate effectively in both Japanese and English.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a multinational environment or at one of the Big Four accounting firms.

Nissho Boki Level 2, U.S. CPA, or equivalent certification.

Familiarity with NetSuite or other accounting software systems.
