Business Development Director – Global Consulting / Market Expansion
Role Overview
A global consulting and market entry advisory firm is seeking a Business Development Director to join its Tokyo-based team. This role focuses on building relationships with major Japanese corporations and supporting their international expansion through advisory services, market research, and business development support.
The position involves engaging with senior decision-makers at large Japanese companies to understand their strategic priorities and identify opportunities where advisory and market development services can support overseas growth, innovation initiatives, and investment strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Client Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with large Japanese corporations through meetings, calls, email communication, events, and industry conferences.
Identify potential clients and develop new business opportunities.
Understand clients’ strategic priorities, including international expansion, innovation, sustainability initiatives, and investment activities.
Develop tailored proposals and close deals to achieve sales targets.
Strategic Advisory Sales
Engage with senior executives such as heads of innovation, investment leaders, and strategic planning teams.
Translate client needs into structured consulting proposals and service offerings.
Provide solutions that support global expansion, technology partnerships, and market development initiatives.
Maintain ongoing relationships with clients following project completion to support long-term partnerships.

Candidate Requirements
Language
Native-level Japanese (spoken and written)
Business-level English
Experience
Minimum 5+ years of professional experience
At least 2+ years of experience in consulting, advisory services, or a trading company environment, working with Japanese or Asian corporate clients
Proven success in developing sales pipelines and achieving revenue targets
Experience engaging senior decision-makers within large corporate organizations
Experience developing complex proposals and closing consulting or service engagements
Knowledge & Skills
Strong understanding of the Japanese corporate landscape
Familiarity with innovation ecosystems, venture capital environments, or technology sectors is beneficial
Strong relationship-building and networking skills
Ability to translate business challenges into structured consulting solutions
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team
Education
Bachelor’s degree in business, management, engineering, or a related field
Location
